Why your file is so big
In a PDF or a PowerPoint deck full of photos and screenshots, the images are nearly all of the file. A 4000 pixel photo dropped into a small box on a slide still carries all 4000 pixels, even though nobody will ever see them.
Most compressors fix this with one blunt rule, such as "make every image 1920 pixels wide". That ruins a full page background photo and still leaves a thumbnail far larger than it needs to be.
What PPTCompress does differently
It measures how large each image is actually drawn on the page or slide, works out how many pixels that placement really needs at the resolution you choose, and resizes each image to that. An image used in several places gets the largest size any of them needs, so one slide can never make another look worse.
- Merges identical images that a template repeats on every slide
- Removes images a deck still carries but never shows
- Picks the smaller of JPEG or PNG for each image, keeping transparency where it is used
- For PDFs, also trims embedded fonts down to the characters actually used
- Lets you preview any image before and after, and leave specific images untouched
Choose the quality you need
| Preset | Image resolution | JPEG quality | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 120 DPI | 72 | Attachments, sharing, viewing on screen | |
| Balanced | 150 DPI | 80 | Most files. Sharp on any laptop or projector |
| 220 DPI | 88 | Office printing and handouts | |
| Archive | 300 DPI | 92 | Keeping a high quality master that is still smaller |
Resolution and quality can also be set by hand under Advanced.
Files it handles
PowerPoint in both formats: the current .pptx and the older
.ppt from PowerPoint 97 to 2003. Also PDF, Word (.docx) and Excel
(.xlsx). Older .doc and .xls files need to be saved in the newer
format first.
Need the words rather than a smaller file? Convert PDF, Word,
PowerPoint or Excel to Markdown, including old .doc, .ppt and
.xls files.
Questions
Is it free?
Yes. There is no account, no watermark and no sign up.
What happens to my files?
They are processed on our server and deleted within 60 minutes, along with the compressed copy. We do not look at them, keep them, or use them for anything else. Your original on your own computer is never changed; you download a new file.
How large a file can I upload?
Up to 30 MB free / 95 MB paid per file.
Will the file ever get bigger?
No. If the compressed result would not be smaller, you are told and you simply keep your original.
