Reading the old Word format directly
Word 97-2003 files are binary, not the zipped XML of .docx. The converter reads the
document's piece table, the index Word uses to stitch the text together, so it works even on files
that were edited and saved many times. Text in any language comes through, including accented
letters and Chinese, Japanese or Korean characters.

What you get
- Every paragraph of the main document, in order
- Tables as Markdown tables, one row per line
- Fields such as page references and dates show their displayed result, not the field code
Know the limits
The old format stores headings and lists as formatting rather than clean structure, so this
converter does not turn them into # headings or list marks; you get clean paragraphs
instead. Headers, footers, footnotes and images are not included. Password-protected files and
very old Word 6 or Word 95 documents are refused. If you need headings, open the file in Word or
LibreOffice, save it as .docx and use DOCX to Markdown.
What happens to your file
The file is converted on our server and deleted as soon as the Markdown is returned to your browser. We keep no copy of the file or the text. Files up to 30 MB are accepted. See the privacy policy.
Questions
Do I need Microsoft Word to convert a .doc file?
No. The file is read directly on our server; you only need a browser.
Why are my headings plain paragraphs?
Binary .doc files do not mark headings in a way this converter reads. Save as .docx for heading levels.
Is it free?
Yes. Converting to Markdown is free and needs no account. Files up to 30 MB, with a fair-use limit of 30 files an hour per visitor.
Does it convert scanned documents?
No. The converter reads the text stored in the file. A scan or photo of a page has no text layer, so run OCR on it first.
Are images included?
No. The Markdown contains the text, headings, lists and tables. Pictures, charts and drawings are left out.
